The Hydropolitics Association, along with İMMİB (Istanbul Mineral and Metal Exporters’ Association), co-applied for the AWARE project, “Promoting Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change through Prevention of Water Loss” (EFFICIENT USE OF WATER IN INDUSTRY). In this project services were provided by io Environmental Solutions R&D Ltd. Co.
The “Promoting Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change through Prevention of Water Loss” project (AWARE) aims to raise awareness about water use in industry, supporting the prevention of water loss and thus contributing to Turkey’s efforts to adapt to climate change. The opening meeting was held on May 10, 2024, and the project’s closing meeting was held on December 1, 2025.
The Hydropolitics Association participated as a co-applicant and project partner in the project, which aims to raise awareness of water management and improve water usage awareness in the chemical and mining sectors in the Marmara Region.
The project opening ceremony took place on May 10, 2024.
The project’s opening meeting was held in Istanbul on May 10, 2024. Representatives from industry, the public sector, academia, and civil society attended the meeting, which was broadcast on the İMMİB YouTube channel. Following presentations by representatives from the Water Policies Association and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, the details of the project activities were outlined. The meeting also addressed the current state of water management and water resources in Turkey, the impact of climate change on sectors, and how stakeholders and companies can benefit from the project’s future activities.
About the AWARE PROJECT
The Supporting Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change through Preventing Water Loss (AWARE) Project, jointly financed by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey under the Climate Change Adaptation Grant Program, was implemented under the coordination of the Istanbul Minerals and Metals Exporters’ Association General Secretariat (İMMİB) and in partnership with the Water Policies Association.
The project, which aims to support Turkey’s fight against climate change by reducing water consumption in industry, included activities aimed at raising awareness of businesses on water management and improving their capacity and adaptation to climate change by reducing the amount of water consumed in production processes.
The project also included a hybrid survey on water supply, water use in production, and wastewater in the Marmara Region.
Promoting Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change by Preventing Water Lost
“Project for Supporting Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change through Preventing Water Loss”, of which Istanbul Minerals and Metals Exporters’ Associations (İMMİB) is the applicant and coordinator, It is supported by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. This project aims to contribute to climate change adaptation goal by preventing water loss and raising awareness about water management. The co-applicant of the project is the Hydropolitics Association.
The project duration was 18 months
The aim of the project has been basically to raise awareness about water management in the industry. In this context, there are two main target groups: chemicals and chemical products sub-sectors and non-metallic mineral products. The general goal is to improve capacity and adaptation to climate change by reducing water loss in relevant manufacturing industries in the Marmara Region and raising awareness about efficient water management.
The main activities of the project were as follows:
- Preparing climate change analyzes specific to relevant sectors,
- Developing a survey on companies’ water usage and a water usage analysis report,
- Researching and disseminating exemplary practices in water management, conducting preliminary on-site visits and field visits to some of the exemplary practices and preparing review reports on them,
- Organizing online workshops focusing on water saving and circularity,
- Preparing documentaries and booklets using the information obtained from the analyzes and visits,
- Preparation of an Action Plan to be presented at the Ministry level in line with all the information and analysis obtained throughout the project.
In summary, the project aimed to raise awareness about water management in production processes and strengthen resilience to climate change in the non-metallic minerals and chemicals and chemical products sectors. The project included studies to guide businesses on the impacts of climate change on these sectors and how they can prepare for these impacts.
Project Closing Meeting Held – December 1, 2025
The “AWARE – Supporting Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change through Preventing Water Loss Project” was supported by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change’s Climate Change Adaptation Grant Program. This project aims to contribute to the program’s climate change adaptation goals by preventing water loss and raising awareness about water management. The closing meeting of the project, for which the Water Policies Association and İMMİB were co-applicants and İMMİB served as coordinators, was held as a hybrid event on December 1, 2025, at the Istanbul Foreign Trade Center.
The opening speech for the program was delivered by İMMİB Secretary General Dr. S. Armağan VURDU. Later, Prof. Dr. Erdem GÖRGÜN of io Environmental Solutions Ltd. made a statement on the project. Ömer ÖZTÜRK, Head of the Climate Change Adaptation and Local Policies Department at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, joined the program via remote connection and delivered his speech. Dursun Yıldız, President of the Hydropolitics Association, also attended the project closing meeting via remote connection.
Nisa Türköz, Project Coordinator and Director of İMMİB EU Projects, then delivered a presentation titled “Industry’s Water and Climate Journey: Presentation of Project Outcomes.” Türköz provided information about the project’s development and implementation, then explained the project outcomes, noting that the project included a MET Desk Report, Climate Change Sectoral Impact Report, Characterization Report, Guidance Report, Water Consumption per Unit Report, and Action Plan reports. Türköz stated that these reports would be uploaded to the project website and available for download. Project Manager Selcan Baltuk then gave a brief presentation on the project’s outcomes.
