Only 0.007 percent of the Earth’s water resources are on the surface and are easily accessible, not too polluted, and almost immediately useable – interview with Mr Csaba Kőrösi, Director of Directorate for Environmental Sustainability at the Office of the President of the Republic of Hungary.

According to the director, water supply for the population is provided in Hungary, and there are significant reserves, although, water shortage can occur, for example, in the agricultural sector.

Two years ago, a three-week drought caused over HUF 100 billion damage (USD 345 million). In the Homokhátság region, for example, the level of groundwater decreases by 10-15 centimeters per year. Should the problem stay neglected, this region will be a desert within 15-20 years, he said.

“So there is water shortage in Hungary, and saving is much needed”, the director stressed, adding that as to produce clean water, energy is needed, so who does not make any efforts to save water, also waste energy.

In addition, pollution is also a major problem in Hungary and, according to the Director, in this case it must be kept in mind that one drop of oil may make even a thousand liters of water unsuitable for consumption.

In the developing world, 80-90 percentage of the wastewater get back to nature uncleaned. “We burn the candle at both ends: at one end, there is less and less fresh water per capita in the dry regions of the world, and typically in the same regions, wastewater discharges are much larger than the nature can handle it alone” Csaba Kőrösi pointed out.
