A third of all food produced is lost or wasted. This means that the resources used to produce it go wasted, and that around 25% of world’s fresh water supply, and 8-10% of greenhouse gas emissions are used to grow food that ends up being discarded, while over 820 million people around the world suffer from hunger. On this week’s International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, UNECE joined the call for action by all stakeholders – consumers, producers, retailers and traders – to tackle food loss and waste in supply chains and households. UNECE has been working on food loss and waste since 2013, linked to its work on Agricultural Quality Standards, and has developed a range of tools that can support concrete measures and contribute to the circular economy.
