The opening meeting of the AWARE Project, which aims to raise awareness about water management and climate change in the chemical and mining sectors, was held in Istanbul on May 10, 2024, hosted by IMMIB and the Water Policies Association. The meeting, attended by sector representatives, academics, civil society organizations, and experts, also included officials from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the Ministry of Industry and Technology. The event, broadcast live on the IMMIB YouTube channel, featured opening speeches by IMMIB Deputy Secretary General Coşkun KIRLIOĞLU, IMMIB Board Member H. Süha TAŞPOLATOĞLU, and IMMIB Board Treasurer Vedat ÖKSÜZ.
Dursun YILDIZ, President of the Hydropolitics Association, gave a presentation on “The State of Water Efficiency in Industry and Our Water Management in Turkey.” Following this, Ömer ÖZTÜRK, an expert from the Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, provided information on the Ministry’s and the Climate Change Department’s activities and ongoing projects in this area. In the second part of the event, the IMMIB European Union Projects Branch informed participants about the project’s objectives, future activities, and expected outcomes. Participants then contributed to the event and the project by asking questions and offering suggestions regarding both the project and water management during the question-and-answer session.
The event highlighted the need to analyze Turkey’s groundwater and surface water resources on a basin scale in order to assess the state of water availability and make informed decisions. Projections developed for the future of water basins indicate that a significant portion of the country will face a water deficit in 2030 and beyond. In addition to water consumption, climate change will also accelerate this deficit. The amount of water used in industry and production throughout the country, including the Marmara Region, is at a level that necessitates preventative measures.
Due to the availability and usage of water in our country, water resources are one of the areas where the effects of climate change will be most clearly visible. Therefore, the “AWARE – Supporting Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation through Water Loss Prevention Project,” implemented by IMMIB and the Water Policies Association, focuses on measures to be taken in this regard. This project aims to increase the resilience capacity to the effects of climate change by raising the level of knowledge and awareness regarding water management in the chemical and non-metallic mineral products sectors. The Marmara Region, with its high population density and industrial presence, was chosen as the project’s operational area as it is the most critical region for these efforts.
