Water for Peace: What’s the role of the Water Convention?
More than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders. Despite 153 countries sharing transboundary basins, only 26 have operational arrangements for all basins, highlighting the need for action.
With 52 Parties, more than 20 countries in the accession process and a total of 130 countries participating in its activities, the Water Convention provides the much-needed intergovernmental platform to accelerate transboundary cooperation, increase political willingness and capacity.
Effective collaboration in managing shared water resources not only serves as a powerful tool for preventing conflicts, but also fosters trust and mutual understanding among nations, communities, and water users that can facilitate cooperation beyond water.
UNECE, as the secretariat of the Water Convention, together with UNESCO has therefore co-chaired the Task Force to prepare World Water Day 2024.
